Well, I woke up this morning to learn about a story that has been developing in New York City. Apparently, Mayor Eric Adams has launched a program in which illegal immigrants in NYC can be provided with pre-paid debit cards with up to $10,000 for food and other necessities.
The program is currently scheduled to provide cards to only 500 immigrants as a ‘trial period’. However, the contract that was signed includes payments of up to $2.5B over 10 years. Also, a no-bid contract was issued to MoCaFi to provide blank debit cards to the city. A service for which they will receive up to $53M.
Mayor Adams is defending this program as a ‘cost savings’ plan. His cost savings are derived from the fact that existing providers to the current immigrant community are tossing out $7.2M of wasted food per year. The theory is that by allowing these immigrants to purchase their own food; there will be less waste. It seems that Latinos just don’t like eating the public-provided food given to them, for free.
To put it mildly, people in NYC are pissed off.
